What Are the Marlboro Strength Categories?
Marlboro organises its product range into four strength tiers. Each tier corresponds to a different level of tobacco density and filter ventilation.

What Tobacco Does Marlboro Use?
Every Marlboro cigarette uses a blend of two primary tobacco types. The ratio changes by variant.
Virginia Flue-Cured Tobacco
Light golden colour. Mild sweetness. This tobacco contributes the smooth, clean base in every Marlboro variant. Marlboro Gold has a higher Virginia ratio - which is why it tastes lighter.
Burley Air-Cured Tobacco
Brown, fuller-bodied tobacco. Adds the characteristic bold note to Marlboro Red. Higher Burley content equals stronger, more intense flavour. Full-flavour variants use more Burley.
Philip Morris also adds a proprietary casing and top dressing to the tobacco blend. That blend has remained largely unchanged since 1954 - it is what gives Marlboro its recognisable taste across all variants.
